Resources for Transportation Planning and Alternative-Fuels Options

This page provides access to transportation planning analysis tools and models, as well as information on vehicles, alternative fuels, and fleet analysis. We provide these resources for state- and local-level energy analysts, officials, and decision makers who are interested in requesting help from the Technical Assistance Project.

General Transportation Planning

  • Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center

Provides access to a range of information and resources that enable use of alternative fuels, as well as other petroleum-reduction options such as advanced vehicles, fuel blends, idle reduction, and fuel economy.

  • Transportation Energy Data Book

Provides a comprehensive source of transportation data and information for policymakers and analysts. The latest data for various aspects of the transportation industry are presented, including fossil fuels, alternative fuels, vehicles, and emissions.

Transportation Planning Analysis Tools

  • Fleet Analysis Tools

Provides access to easy-to-use calculators and sophisticated modeling tools that estimate emission reductions or analyze the outcome that a specific emission-reduction strategy may produce.

  • E85 Fleet Toolkit

Provides information on developing E85 infrastructure, including how to evaluate the best options for fleets, the equipment and technologies required to install an E85 fueling site, other fleets' successes and difficulties in implementing E85 infrastructure, contact information and resources, and how to develop E85 (85% ethanol/15% gasoline) fueling stations.

  • Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation Model

Accesses a model that fully evaluates energy and emissions impacts of advanced vehicle technologies and new transportation fuels, tracking the fuel cycle from wells to wheels and the vehicle cycle through material recovery and vehicle disposal.

  • Online Tools from the Center for Transportation Analysis at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Provides access to online tools and Web sites that help the user assess a wide range of transportation information, including infrastructure data and design, travel and transportation survey data, and fuel economy.

  • State Assessment of Biomass Resources

Provides comprehensive information on biomass resources available in each state including crops and crop residues, forestry residues, and urban wastes. The tool allows the user to analyze potential biofuel production from a variety of feedstocks, using current technology and anticipated future technological advances. Potential biofuels demand can also be analyzed.
