Michigan Weatherization and Low-Income Energy Programs
Michigan Weatherization
The Michigan Department of Human Services manages the state's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), a federally funded, low-income residential energy conservation program. The program provides free home energy conservation services to low-income Michigan homeowners and renters. These services reduce energy use and lower utility bills, thus creating more self-sufficient households.
Visit the state map of weatherization operators to find the action agency or non-profit organization that provides service in your county. For more information about the Weatherization Program contact your local weatherization operator or call 517-335-3094. Only local weatherization operators can make eligibility determinations for this program due to many variables.
| Total number of households receiving assistance in 2006 | 11,541 |
|---|---|
| Percent elderly | 13% |
| Percent with children | 42% |

The National Energy Accessibility and Affordability Project (NEAAP) publishes a complete list of the programs available to low-income households in the state, including those funded by federal and state governments, Michigan utilities, and charities. NEAAP publishes this list as part of the LIHEAP Clearinghouse, which is maintained on the National Center for Appropriate Technology Web site and receives support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The list also includes LIHEAP contacts in Michigan. Under federal rules, Michigan can use up to 25% of its LIHEAP funds for weatherization.
