North Carolina Weatherization and Low-Income Energy Programs

North Carolina Weatherization

North Carolina's Weatherization Assistance Program provides weatherization services to low-income persons throughout the state. The Weatherization Assistance Program reduces household energy use and costs by improving the energy efficiency of a participant's home.

The statewide Weatherization Assistance Program is administered by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Economic Opportunity, and local Community Action Associations deliver weatherization services in the field. Energy and Low-Income Heating Assistance (LIHEAP) in North Carolina

Complete List of North Carolina's Low-Income Energy Programs

The National Energy Accessibility and Affordability Project (NEAAP) publishes a complete list of the programs available to low-income households in the state, including those funded by federal and state governments, North Carolina utilities, and charities. NEAAP publishes this list as part of the LIHEAP Clearinghouse, which is maintained on the National Center for Appropriate Technology Web site and receives support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The list also includes LIHEAP contacts in North Carolina. Under federal rules, North Carolina can use up to 25% of its LIHEAP funds for weatherization.

State Energy Assistance Programs

Operation Fan / Heat Relief
This special emergency assistance project helps elderly North Carolinians cope with the heat. Electric fans are given to those elderly citizens who have the greatest need for relief from the heat. Funding assistance is available May through September of each year. The fans are distributed by one local provider in each county and are given as a gift. During the summer of 2002, 4,674 fans were purchased statewide and were distributed. For more information, contact your local aging organization
