Energy and Low-Income Heating Assistance (LIHEAP) in Montana

Complete List of Montana's Low-Income Energy Programs

The National Energy Accessibility and Affordability Project (NEAAP) publishes a complete list of the programs available to low-income households in the state, including those funded by federal and state governments, Montana utilities, and charities. NEAAP publishes this list as part of the LIHEAP Clearinghouse, which is maintained on the National Center for Appropriate Technology Web site and receives support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The list also includes LIHEAP contacts in Montana. Under federal rules, Montana can use up to 25% of its LIHEAP funds for weatherization.

State Energy Assistance Programs

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services also coordinates heating assistance — LIHEAP — in Montana.

Several utilities in Montana offer energy assistance programs:

  • NorthWestern Energy (formerly the Montana Power Company)
    Customers who qualify LIEAP, automatically receive a 15 percent discount on their NorthWestern Energy electric and natural gas bills. Customers must apply through a local Human Resource Development Council Call 1-888-467-2669 for more information.

  • Flathead Electric Cooperative
    Eligible members receive a credit equal to half the basic charge on their bill each month. In most cases, this is credit of $8 per month. Call the Kalispell Office (406-751-4483) or the Libby Office (406-293-7122) for more information.

  • Missoula Electric Cooperative
    Customers who receive LIEAP are eligible for a discount. Call 1-800-352-5200 for more information.
