Alabama Weatherization and Low-Income Energy Programs

Alabama Weatherization

The DOE-funded Weatherization Assistance Program for the state is administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. They set eligibility requirements and oversee the local agencies that provide weatherization in the field. Program operators install insulation, replace or repair windows and doors, seal air leaks, patch small areas of the roof, or under skirting. Energy and Low-Income Heating Assistance (LIHEAP) in Alabama

Complete List of Alabama's Low-Income Energy Programs

The National Energy Accessibility and Affordability Project (NEAAP) publishes a complete list of the programs available to low-income households in the state, including those funded by federal and state governments, Alabama utilities, and charities. NEAAP publishes this list as part of the LIHEAP Clearinghouse, which is maintained on the National Center for Appropriate Technology Web site and receives support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The list also includes LIHEAP contacts in Alabama. Under federal rules, Alabama can use up to 25% of its LIHEAP funds for weatherization.

State Energy Assistance Programs

The Red Cross has the following energy assistance program available.

  • Project SHARE (Service to Help Alabamians with Relief in Energy)
    This program helps low-income households with home utility payments. To apply call the toll-free number, 1-800-548-2547 or contact Casework Services at (205) 458-8287. The Red Cross also works through the following companies to provide assistance. Alabama Power Co.: 1-800-245-2244; Alagasco: 1-800- 292-4008; Mobile Gas: 251-476-8052.
