Tire manufacturer Goodyear has received multiple accolades for its self-regulating tire system, which monitors and automatically adjusts tire pressure. Self-regulating tires can improve a vehicle’s fuel economy by 2 to 3 percent, while significantly extending tire life and improving safety. This technology, developed with the support of a $1.5 million award from EERE, was named one of Car and Driver magazine’s 10 most promising future technologies and one of Time magazine’s best inventions of 2012, and received the 2012 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards. The system was designed for commercial vehicles, but Goodyear is pursuing the development of self-regulating tires for use in passenger vehicles.

The Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) develops and deploys efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation technologies that will enable America to use less petroleum. These technologies will provide Americans with greater freedom of mobility and energy security, while lowering costs and reducing impacts on the environment.
