January 14, 2013
Mesquite Solar 1, the first 150-megawatt (MW) phase of the Mesquite Solar complex in Arlington, Arizona, has been completed, Sempra U.S. Gas & Power announced on January 9. The company's photovoltaic solar energy project about 40 miles west of Phoenix is generating enough electricity to power about 56,000 homes, and ranks among the largest in the United States. The power has been sold to Pacific Gas & Electric under a 20-year contract.
Construction on the 4,000-acre site began in June, 2011 and employed more than 450 workers. Future phases planned at the solar complex could produce up to 700 MW, making it one of North America's largest solar power installations. See the Sempra press release.
