DOE Funds Clean Energy Projects on Tribal Lands and Alaska Villages
DOE announced on August 13 its award of up to $13.6 million in multi-year funding for new clean energy projects on tribal lands. In addition to the Alaskan villages, the funding will go to tribes and in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. Duke Energy Plans to Add Solar Power to 850 North Carolina Sites
Duke Energy Carolinas plans to install 20 megawatts of solar panels at customer sites throughout North Carolina. The utility has also contracted to buy all the power from an 18-megawatt solar photovoltaic facility that SunEdison plans to build north of Charlotte. More

North Carolina Sets a Requirement for 12.5% Renewable Power by 2021
A new law in North Carolina requires investor-owned utilities to draw on renewable energy for 12.5% of their power supply by 2021 while requiring other utilities to achieve 10% renewable power by 2018. The bill also credits energy efficiency and features set-asides for specific energy sources. More

First Biodiesel Plant Opens in North Carolina
Piedmont Biofuels began by making biodiesel from French fry grease this week at a new plant in Pittsboro, North Carolina. It is the first biodiesel plant to go into operation in North Carolina, and is one of three biodiesel plants currently under construction in the state. More
