Illinois Orders Study of Smart Grid Initiative
The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved a rate request by ComEd that includes a plan to study smart grid technologies. Such technologies can alert the utility when an outage occurs and help customers track electricity rates on an hourly basis—enabling them to conserve and cut costs. More

Midwest States and Manitoba Sign Agreements to Reduce Greenhouse Gases, Promote Energy Efficiency and Renewables
Nine Midwestern states and the Canadian province of Manitoba signed an agreement to promote energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, 11 Midwestern states have adopted a platform that establishes other regional goals to promote energy efficiency, biobased products, renewable sources for electricity, and carbon capture and storage. Illinois Grants More than $1.5 Million for Solar Thermal Development
The state's Solar Thermal Grant Program, administered by the Illinois state energy office, provides funds to cover up to 30 percent of the cost of installing a solar thermal energy system. The grants are being awarded for systems that produce heat energy for large-scale applications, such as car washes, commercial laundries, high-density housing developments, and public swimming pools. Illinois Requires 25 Percent Renewable Power by 2025
A new Illinois law requires the state's large electric utilities to draw on renewable energy for 25% of their power supply by 2025. The law also creates the Illinois Power Agency, which has broad powers to develop electricity procurement plans and to build renewable energy power plants. More

Illinois Governor and Midwest Generation Agree on Long-Range Emissions Reduction Plan
An agreement between Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and Midwest Generation will reduce mercury, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide emissions and bring the state into compliance with federal regulations. The deal includes developing new wind power plants in central Illinois. More
