DOE Funds Clean Energy Projects on Tribal Lands and Alaska Villages
DOE announced on August 13 its award of up to $13.6 million in multi-year funding for new clean energy projects on tribal lands. In addition to the Alaskan villages, the funding will go to tribes and in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. Interior Department Awards $15 Million for Forest Thinning on Public Lands
The Interior Department will direct Recovery Act funds toward 55 projects to remove "hazardous fuels" from areas susceptible to wildfires. Of those 55 projects, 23 in eight states are designated as biomass utilization projects, which means that the small trees, accumulated deadwood, and underbrush will be converted to energy. More

Alaska Releases Energy Guide, Sets Renewable Energy Goal
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin announced the release of an energy guide that identifies energy options for a state in which residents rely heavily on diesel generators. The guide aims to help Alaskans reduce their use of diesel and reach a goal of generating 50 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2025. More

Juneau, Alaska, Cuts Electricity Use Drastically During Crisis
Several avalanches cut off the supply of hydropower to Juneau, Alaska, in mid-April, forcing the use of diesel generators that raised power costs fivefold. In response, the city cut both its peak power demand and its average electricity use by 40%. More

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has unveiled a short-term energy plan to address skyrocketing energy costs in the state. The $1.2 billion package has two parts — returning surplus funds to electric utilities to reduce ratepayer bills, and an energy debit card that can be used by residents during the next 12 months.
