California Petitions DOE to Use its Own Standards for Clothes Washers

September 14, 2005

The California Energy Commission (CEC) submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Energy for exemption from federal preemption of California's water conservation standards for residential clothes washers. See the September 13 letter to DOE posted on the CEC Web site (PDF 383 KB).

California's standards are more stringent than those DOE sets for the rest of the country. And since 1976, California has been allowed to set its own appliance efficiency standards. See California's current regulations, including a listing of energy- and water-efficient appliances in a database under California's Appliance Efficiency Program.
