Two California Universities Purchase Large Blocks of Green Power
The University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) announced purchases of 39 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) and 34 million kWh of green power at a sustainability conference in Santa Cruz on June 23. This represents 15% of the electricity consumption of both university systems in California and is enough to supply the needs of 6,900 homes for a year. Through these purchases, CU and CSU become the universities with the largest purchases of green power in 2005.
Both universities made the purchases as part of larger policies committing them to sustainability. For more information about this landmark purchase, see EERE's Green Power Network.
