Virginia Commission Increases Net Metering Capacity Limit to 500 kW

May 10, 2005

The Virginia State Corporation Commission issued an order on April 20 increasing the rated capacity of distributed generators that are connected to Virginia utilities through net metering to 500 kilowatts (kW). In 2004, the Virginia Legislature had voted to (instruct the commission to) increase the size of net-metered systems for non-residential customers from the previous limit of 25 kW to 500 kW. The size limit for residential customers that qualify for net metering is 10 kW. The commission also clarified a previous order for utilities to set the limit for the total capacity of renewable energy systems connected to a single utility's grid at 0.1% of its generating capacity.
