South Dakota Passes Law to Expedite Wind Farm Siting

March 01, 2005

Governor Mike Rounds signed a bill to speed the development of large wind farms in South Dakota. This measure, offered on behalf of the Public Utilities Commission, will streamline and strengthen the state permit process. This legislation clarifies the PUC's siting authority over wind farms, shortens the siting approval process from 12 months to six, and gives landowners financially protection when windmills must be removed. The new law will become effective July 1.
