Illinois Governor Proposes 8% by 2012 RPS in Annual Address

February 03, 2005

In his February 3 State of the State address, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich promised to submit a proposal to the Illinois Commerce Commission that would require utilities to procure 8% of their power needs from renewable resources by 2012. The plan would also stipulate that 75% of that renewable energy would come from wind power.

The Governor set a goal of 3,000 MW of wind power in the state by 2012, or approximately enough to power one million Illinois households. He also said that he would ask the Illinois Finance Authority to look at ways to provide financing for wind power projects.
