New York Motors Program Marks Milestone

November 29, 2004

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced its motors programs had surpassed a milestone on November 29. Through the New York Energy $martâ„¢ Premium-Efficiency Motors Program, NYSERDA has facilitated the sale of 10,000 NEMA Premiumâ„¢ motors to commercial and industrial facilities throughout the state. NEMA — the National Electrical Manufacturers Association — lists high-efficiency motors with its NEMA Premium label in order to reduce electricity consumption. These motors are up to 4% more efficient than standard models.

Motors are important for energy efficiency because many of them operate for long hours. The. Motors account for about 23% of of all U.S. energy use and two-thirds of energy use at industrial facilities. The NYSERDA Energy $mart Premium-Efficiency Motors Program is responsible for saving more than 9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption per year.

Through this program, NYSERDA provides incentives of up to $80 per motor to vendors, customer education, and financial assistance to the customers. Vendor participation has increased to the point where today 98% of motor vendors in New York participate. For more information, see NYSERDA's November 29 press release.
