Arizona to Include Solar HVAC in Renewables Portfolio

December 17, 2004

Arizona approved a pilot project on November 10 that allows utilities to include solar heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as qualifying technologies in the state's Environmental Portfolio Standard. Solar HVAC systems use absorption cooling, and the amount of power necessary for cooling is small compared to what is consumed by a compressor in a conventional electric air conditioner or refrigerator. Three years ago Arizona passed its portfolio standard that requires utilities to generate a minimum percentage of their total retail energy sales from renewable sources.
