New York, Union, and Company Team Up for Solar

December 17, 2004

New York Lieutenant Governor Mary Donahue announced on November 23 a grant of $148,000 to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association to install a 30-kW PV system on the union training center in Latham, New York. With this announcement, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has now helped fund four solar power facilities on IBEW training centers. The others are located in Watertown, Harriman, and Niagara Falls.

The NYSERDA grants make it a first for a state agency to support solar installations on union halls. Joseph Maraia, president of the New York State Association of Electrical Workers said, "Who better than electricians and contractors to help bring this new generating technology to the mainstream?"
