Utah Exempts Wind Equipment from Sales Tax

May 01, 2004

Utah Governor Olene Walker signed into law a bill that would provide a sales tax exemption for wind turbines and other forms of renewable generators. The bill was introduced by state Senator Leonard Blackman as an incentive to build wind projects in the state and passed the legislature with an overwhelming majority. Bill sponsors believe it will make it easier to attract developers to build wind farms in Utah. Less than 1 MW of wind power is currently installed in Utah; more than 200 MW are installed in the neighboring states of Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
