Honolulu Offers Solar System Initiative

May 03, 2003

The City and County of Honolulu and Hawaiian Electric Company have formed a partnership and created a new program to ease the purchase of solar water heating systems for low to moderate income homeowners and landlords. This new program, the Honolulu Solar Roofs Initiative, offers seven-year loans at zero- to 2-percent interest (depending on income levels) to finance the purchase and installation of a solar water heating system. HECO also even further cost savings through a $750 per home rebate on the installation of energy saving equipment.

"This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to transforming Honolulu into a sustainable city that promotes the efficient and clean use of its resources," Mayor Jeremy Harris said.

More than 20,000 solar systems have been installed with the help of rebates from HECO and its subsidiaries. With the rebate program consumers have saved $6.2 million in energy costs and Hawaii 93,000 barrels of oil.
