Maryland Breaks Ground on State's Largest Solar Power Project
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley broke ground on July 7 for a 160-acre solar farm that will be the state's largest solar power installation. Located on the grounds of the Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, the Maryland solar project will produce 20 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 2,700 homes. First Solar, which signed a 20-year lease, has a 100% stake in the project. FirstEnergy Corporation's subsidiary FirstEnergy Solutions will purchase the facility's 20-megawatt output for 20 years under a long-term purchase power agreement. The agreement provides the Maryland solar project the source of guaranteed revenue necessary to obtain financing for its construction. See the governor's press release.
