Oregon Launches Cool Schools Program
Up to 43 Oregon schools will get energy efficiency upgrades this summer because of new "Cool Schools" legislation signed into law on June 23 by Governor by Governor John Kitzhaber. House Bill 2960 provides access to financing for school districts to improve lighting and heating as well as to make other improvements through the Oregon Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Deployment Fund.
Because the average Oregon K-12 public school building is nearly 40 years old, many facilities have leaks, outdated boilers, dim lighting, and poor ventilation. As a result, they are increasingly expensive to maintain. The potential benefits to schools and Oregon's economy are significant because every $1 million invested in energy efficiency creates as many as 15 jobs, according the governor's office.
