Biodiesel Blends Now Used in More Than 50 East Tennessee Fleets

February 23, 2006

More than 50 fleets in East Tennessee are now using biodiesel. The three most recent additions include Tennessee Valley Marble, Tennessee Department of Transportation, and Bristol Virginia Utilities. These companies are using either B20 or a lower blend in all their current diesel vehicles.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has been involved with Clean Cities over the past several years and has learned a lot about biodiesel through Clean Cities meetings and events. TDOT made the step starting in November in their region 1 area (Knoxville and Johnson City). Now 133 on-road vehicles run on B20, and TDOT plans to transition fleets in other TDOT regions to B20 in the future.

Tennessee Valley Marble was considering using biodiesel for almost a year and now they are proud to run B5 in seven off-road vehicles including backhoes, loaders and large forklifts. Bristol Virginia Utilities made the decision recently to use B5, which is now stored on-site in underground storage tanks.
