DOE Grants to the States

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) provides grants to the states through two programs: Weatherization and the State Energy Program (SEP). The grants are given directly to state agencies according to a formula that depends on annual appropriations from Congress. Over the past decade, these appropriations have placed these programs among those with the greatest amount of funding in EERE (see charts).

DOE Regional Offices play a key role in these grant programs and interact with the state agencies that administer them. The Regional Offices are also DOE's first points of contact for answering questions about these programs.

Weatherization Assistance Program

This program provides grants to states to weatherize the homes of low-income families. Weatherization permanently reduces bills by increasing the energy efficiency of homes.

State Energy Program

This program provides funding to states to manage their own energy programs. States use SEP grants for a wide range of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
