Alabama Hosts Conference on Rebuilding in the Aftermath of Hurricanes
April 2006
The Energy, Weatherization, and Technology Division of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) sponsored a Rebuild Alabama conference in January titled "Rebuilding the South in the Aftermath of Hurricanes Ivan through Katrina." The conference was hosted by Tuskegee University and the World Conference of Mayors in partnership with the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. The conference was held at the Kellogg Conference Center at Tuskegee and was attended by local, state, and federal officials, academia, builders, and suppliers.
The conference emphasized rebuilding to the latest energy building codes and the repair and reconstruction of hurricane-damaged buildings using the latest energy efficient tools and building practices. The rebuilding technologies and practices presented at this conference can be used by communities affected by hurricanes or any other natural disaster to build safer, stronger, more sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings. This conference was partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy State Energy Program (SEP)–Rebuild America Program through SEP Special Projects. Tuskegee University publishes online a summary of the conference.
