ENERGY STAR® Appliances Increase Market Share in California
February 2006
A new draft report reveals that the market share of Energy StarĀ® qualified appliances has increased significantly in California since 1999. The report, which is still in draft format, was written by Itron, Inc. in San Diego, for Southern California Edison as part of its Market Share Tracking Project.
The report shows that 42% of refrigerators sold in California in 2004 were Energy Star qualified. Interestingly, independent retailers and small regional outlets sold a higher percentage of the energy-efficient appliances than did national chain stores. The share of Energy Star clothes washers increased from 12% in 1999 to 60% in 2004. For dishwashers, the market share jumped from 29% in 1999 to 90% in 2004. Furthermore, most residential dishwashers that came on the market after 2003 meet or exceed Energy Star requirements.
