What Are Rebuild America Projects in the States?

These windows provide natural lighting at the Kingston School District in New York and reduce energy costs from electrical lighting. The project was part of a $6.9 million upgrade to facilities throughout the school district facilitated by a local Rebuild America coalition.

Among DOE programs in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Rebuild America has sponsored many projects in the states through EERE's State Energy Program (SEP). Find listings of more than 100 projects in the last few years by searching for "Rebuild America" under the online listing of SEP Special Projects.

About Rebuild America

Rebuild America is a network of hundreds of community-based partnerships formed to save energy, improve building performance, and ease air pollution by reducing the demand for energy. They aim to enhance the quality of life through energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Created by DOE in 1994, Rebuild America serves as a mechanism for revitalization and job creation in many U.S. communities. Learn more about Rebuild America.

Its activities occur in five specific sectors: K-12 schools, colleges and universities, state and local government, public and multi-family housing, and commercial buildings. Each sector offers substantial, unique opportunities to save energy and money. Rebuild America publishes online more about each of these sectors.

Example

Most state energy offices and the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) are involved in Rebuild America projects, including:

  • Rebuild Louisiana
The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources manages this program to renovate buildings for energy efficiency.
  • NASEO's Information Exchange to Enhance State Rebuild America Projects
NASEO facilitates this partnership project between states and DOE by identifying project opportunities and facilitating discussion among its member directors of state energy offices about the future direction of Rebuild America. The project runs from 2000 to 2005.
