Commonwealth of Massachusetts Energy Efficiency Partnership-Outreach, Training, and Assessments

SEP Special Project, Massachusetts, 2004

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Energy Efficiency Partnership (MAEEP) (formerly MAIOF) has worked with the DOE Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) for more than five years to support deployment of energy efficiency technologies and tools to the industrial sector to increase productivity and competitiveness. Through a combination of outreach, training, technical assessments, and coordination with other DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) programs, MAEEP has demonstrated successful delivery of value-added services to the most energy-intensive industrial facilities in the Commonwealth and the region.

The MAEEP program has been invigorated by a new partnership with three major electric utilities, Massachusetts Electric (a National Grid company), NStar Gas and Electric, Western Massachusetts Electric (a Northeast Utilities company), and a gas distribution company, KeySpan Energy Delivery. This partnership provides access to the largest energy users in the state and additional financial resources to leverage ITP programs. Continued financial support from ITP to MAEEP will ensure that the goals of ITP are met, reducing energy intensity and increasing manufacturing productivity and competitiveness.

A continuing goal for MAEEP is to provide assistance to the largest industrial energy users in the Commonwealth. One hundred twenty of the largest energy users in the country are in Massachusetts. MAEEP will intensify its interaction with these facilities with the following activities: 1) provide information about DOE ITP and other EERE programs; 2) introduce BP tools and training opportunities; 3) identify energy efficiency opportunities; and 4) secure and leverage resources and services to implement energy savings, productivity improvements, and resource conservation.

The proposed program deliverables include participation from key industry and trade groups, utilities, educational institutions, state and federal agencies, and related DOE programs. The MAEEP program, led by the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CEERE) and the National Environmental Technology Institute (NETI), will continue to work with our public and private partners to provide leadership for delivery of ITP tools and resources, as well as to integrate other EERE programs and activities, in the Commonwealth.
