Continuing Efforts along Gulf Coast

January 20, 2006

In the wake of recent hurricanes, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is providing assistance to the rebuilding efforts in a variety ways.

EERE, along with the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC), LSU AgCenter, and volunteers from the Building Science Corporation, have worked together to develop a strategy to make rebuilt homes safer and better performing.

Working with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and The Home Depot, EERE has organized workshops and training session to teach thousands of consumers on repairing storm-damaged homes using best practices for energy efficiency and durability. The first event will be held at the Pontchartrain Center in Kennar, La. from 9am – 4pm on January 22 and 23. The next two scheduled Home Repair Workshops will take place in Biloxi, Miss., on January 28-29 from 9am – 4pm at the Imperial Palace; and at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, Ala., on February 4 from 9am – 4pm. In November 2005, EERE launched its Disaster Recovery and Building Reconstruction web site. The site brings together the collective resources, building research, and lessons learned from past catastrophes in one central location.
