Dr. Petros Sofronis, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was chosen to lead the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) through a collaboration with Kyushu University. I2CNER is the sixth and newest member of the World Premier International (WPI) Research Center Initiative, which was originally launched in 2007 by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Each WPI center receives up to $10 million per year for up to 10 years, extendable to 15 years. I2CNER was established in 2010 at Kyushu University in Japan in collaboration with the University of Illinois. The new Institute's objective is to develop the underlying science required to overcome the barriers to hydrogen adoption and to enable the technical breakthroughs needed to efficiently capture CO2 and sequester it or convert it to useful products. Dr. Sofronis has been supported by DOE through EERE's Fuel Cell Technologies Program to lead a research effort on understanding hydrogen embrittlement of pipeline steel and developing potential strategies to mitigate these effects.
The presentation will focus on the new institute's research plans to catalyze efficient technologies for: hydrogen production and material transformation with no CO2 emission; hydrogen storage materials; hydrogen embrittlement resistant materials; high efficiency fuel cells; and safe carbon capture, ocean, and geological storage or efficient conversion of CO2 to useful products.
