Major Investment in Ethanol Conversion Technology Announced
December 14, 2006
Broin Companies, a leading U.S. ethanol producer, has announced that beginning this February it will invest $200 million to convert its current ethanol facility in Emmetsburg, Iowa into a cellulose to ethanol biorefinery by 2009. The plant will employ advanced separation process technologies for cellulosic biomass. These technologies were developed under a five-year research initiative that was jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and South Dakota State University . Broin expects the new technology to be able to produce up to 27 percent more ethanol from an acre of corn while consuming as much as 83 percent less energy than a conventional corn-to-ethanol facility.
