DOE Recognizes Top-Performing Manufacturers with 2010 Save Energy Now Awards
May 12, 2010
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today recognized 151 U.S. manufacturers for their outstanding achievements in industrial energy efficiency with the third annual Save Energy Now Awards.
Winning plants and companies were recognized for actively pursuing energy-saving opportunities identified during a 2009 Save Energy Now energy assessment, which has led to a total of more than $32 million in cost savings and 4 trillion Btu in total energy savings over the past year.
In 2009, more than 500 plants applied for and received energy assessments by a DOE Energy Expert or university-based Industrial Assessment Center. Companies receiving 2010 Save Energy Now awards reported their energy assessment results and met the following criteria one year later:
- Energy Saver: More than 75,000 million Btu total energy savings or more than 7.5% total energy savings.
- Energy Champion: More than 250,000 million Btu total energy savings or more than 15% total energy savings.
In the most recent round of awards, DOE recognized 95 plants with the Energy Saver award and 56 plants with the Energy Champion award at the Energy Efficiency Global Forum on May 10, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
The award-winning companies were able to reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions, while increasing their competitiveness, which demonstrates how energy efficiency can help to strengthen the nation's energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality—all through technologies and practices that are available today.
Save Energy Now is a national initiative of DOE's Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) to achieve a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity, or the amount of energy used per unit of production, over 10 years. Through Save Energy Now, ITP conducts no-cost energy assessments at U.S. manufacturing facilities to identify ways to reduce energy use in key industrial operations.
Award-winning companies are publicly recognized at major industry meetings or ITP events throughout the year. The full list of 2010 Save Energy Now award recipients can be found on the Save Energy Now Web site.
