100 Energy Saving Assessments and Counting

June 05, 2006

As part of a comprehensive effort launched by Secretary Bodman in October, DOE is sending certified experts to 200 industrial manufacturing facilities. The purpose of the assessments is to identify immediate opportunities to save energy and money, primarily by focusing on steam and process heating systems. These processes consume nearly 80% of the energy used by U.S. industry. Companies such as 3M, Alcoa, Dupont, the J. R. Simplot Company, Weyerhaeuser, and others have benefited from assessments provided by energy experts using DOE software tools and technical information. These assessments continue to yield major bottom-line benefits for these companies as energy prices rise.

Initial results for the first 50 assessments:

Number of plant assessments with reported results: 50

Total potential natural gas savings: 14.9 trillion BTUs per year

Equivalent to the natural gas consumed by 207,234 homes, annually

Total potential energy cost savings: $152.7 million
