DOE Partners with Industry to Train Federal Energy Managers
DOE announced on November 10th its partnership with the Energy Solutions Center Inc. (ESC) to train federal energy managers on the use of energy-efficient technologies fueled with natural gas. ESC is a technology commercialization and market development organization representing energy utilities, municipal energy authorities, and equipment manufacturers and vendors, and its mission is to accelerate the deployment of energy-efficient gas-fueled technologies. DOE and ESC training will provide instruction on commercially available distributed energy resources and combined heat and power (CHP) technologies, although other energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies may be added to the curriculum in the future. See the DOE press release and the Web sites for ESC and DOE's Federal Energy Management Program.
Some examples of the efficiency benefits of natural gas-fired CHP systems can be found in the 2005 Energy Star CHP Awards and Certificates of Recognition, presented to awardees by DOE and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on October 25th. Of the 27 CHP projects that earned awards, 24 are fueled with natural gas (the remaining three use waste steam, fuel oil, and biomass). The projects draw on a variety of technologies, including engines, combustion turbines, microturbines, and fuel cells. See the EPA press release and the list of awards on the EPA CHP Partnership Web site.
