DOE, Masdar to Test Solar PV Coating Technologies

DOE and Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy initiative, announced on February 28 that together they will test the performance of specially coated solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. The modules, developed by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, are designed to avoid the moisture and cementation problems faced by PV module producers worldwide. The coatings were selected for the pilot testing project following exchanges of scientific and technical information between DOE and Masdar. The exchanges included soil sample collection and site visits to Abu Dhabi.

The project is a direct result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that DOE and Masdar signed in April 2010 to promote collaboration on clean and sustainable energy technologies. The United States and the United Arab Emirates will continue collaborating when the second Clean Energy Ministerial is held in Abu Dhabi on April 6-7. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and representatives of other member nations will attend this high-level global forum, which was established in 2009.
