Architecture, Communications Awards Announced at Solar Decathlon

WASHINGTON DC – On October 15, the Solar Decathlon announced the winner of the Architecture contest. This event awards the largest number of points in the event, with a maximum of 200 potential points. The winners included:

1st place: Technische Universität Darmstadt (193.25 points)
2nd place: University of Maryland (189.50 points)
3rd place: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (187.50 points)

The Architecture Jury, composed of Susan Maxman, Grant Simpson, and Gregory Kiss, toured the twenty homes and evaluated their aesthetic beauty, their use of solar and energy efficiency technologies, and other criteria. Gregory Kiss, the jury chairman, announced the results Monday morning in front of a crowd of several hundred team members, Decathlon organizers and media.

On October 16, the Solar Decathlon announced the winner of the Communications contest, worth a total of 100 points. The three top teams were:

1st place: University of Maryland (98.20 points)
2nd place: Santa Clara University (92.45 points)
3rd place: Penn State (90.40 points)
