It's back! The 3rd Solar Decathlon, the nation's foremost college competition to design, build, and test solar-powered homes, opens to the public on the National Mall on October 12.

The opening ceremonies will feature remarks from Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman, Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner, corporate sponsors and organizers, as well as an appearance by members of the twenty teams.

The Solar Decathlon joins 20 college and university teams in a competition to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house. This year's teams come from the United States including Puerto Rico, as well as Canada, Germany, and Spain.

The Solar Decathlon runs from October 12–20, with all homes closed on Wednesday, October 17. Scores will be updated regularly as individual events are judged, with an announcement of the Solar Decathlon winner on Friday, October 19.
