While in New Orleans this week, Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner toured the historic Holy Cross Neighborhood located in the Ninth Ward. Since Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Energy has provided seed funding to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources to encourage application of efficient and renewable energy strategies in the recovery effort in New Orleans. The Holy Cross Neighborhood is a model for rapid recovery, resulting in a community-wide design program and the publication, "Sustainable Restoration Plan for Holy Cross/Lower 9th Ward," incorporating energy efficiency and renewable energy in the neighborhood plan funded by the City of New Orleans.
