The Department of Energy is partnering with the private product safety testing group Underwriters Laboratory to accelerate the pace of bringing America's homegrown ethanol and biodiesel fuels to market by holding a two-day forum to develop national safety standards for E-85 pumps and related equipment.

On October 30, Assistant Secretary Andy Karsner told CBNC's Squawk Box host Carl Quintanilla, "This is a very positive development on the imminent pathway of the growth of E-85." He further stated, "...we at the DOE do not anticipate any trouble whatsoever with Underwriters Laboratory coming to a national reliable technical standard for listing the pumps. That is something that is imminently necessary as we grow and proliferate pumps across the country. It is particularly necessary for the large chains...who are interested for bringing these on 'en masse' to satisfy corporate liability issues."
