State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program Rocks in New York
April 15, 2010
Mark Pusey, from Charlotte Appliance in Rochester, New York, reports that that the appliance rebate program is an unqualified success. On February 12th, staff arrived at the store to find at least 50 people waiting in line for the store to open. From 7:00 a.m. opening day and continuing for the next twelve days, the store was busy all day long. Mark says that his four delivery trucks have been on the road continuously with deliveries expected well into March for many customers.
Charlotte Appliance credits some of the success to strategic promotions such as a major interstate billboard, TV, and newspaper coverage leading up to launch day for the rebates. In addition, they stocked up with over 5,000 appliance units available for purchase. Sales for laundry appliances topped the list—the store sold over 500 sets!
New York launched their much anticipated energy efficient appliance rebate program with 67,000 calls to the hotline and many reports of stores experiencing "Black Friday" sale days. Customers purchased energy efficient refrigerators, freezers, washers, and dishwashers—appliances they needed to buy—in order to get good rebates issued by the state. The State of New York will be administering well over a whopping $18,000,000 for 172,987 rebates.
The Department of Energy (DOE) provided consumer messaging and helped prepare the media and retailers throughout the state in partnership with The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), who is administering the program.
Mark Pusey commented that, "Buying energy efficient appliances and the DOE managed rebate program is good for business, good for putting money back into America's pockets, and without a doubt good for saving energy!"
