Midwest Exchange Will Highlight Technical and Financial Resources
Industry members from the Midwest will learn about available financial and technical resources for implementing energy efficiency projects at the Midwest Energy Efficiency Exchange, September 9-10, in Detroit, Michigan. Sponsored by ITP, the Exchange will include various events dedicated to helping industry in the region successfully reduce energy use and save money.
A recognition ceremony honoring DOE Energy Champion Plants and a subsequent networking event will feature remarks from Jennifer Granholm, Governor of Michigan, and Doug Kaempf, ITP Program Manager. On September 10, industrial manufacturers will sign a Memorandum of Understanding committing to reduce their energy intensity 25% in 10 years. Additional events will highlight topics such as DOE's Loan Guarantee Program and an industry leader roundtable. Learn more and register to attend. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Increase Your Energy Management Knowledge at the World Energy Engineering Congress
Learn about industrial energy management, Superior Energy Performance, distributed generation, and other industrial energy efficiency topics at the World Energy Engineering Congress, November 4-6, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Paul Scheihing, ITP Technology Manager, will be presenting “Developing a Voluntary Manufacturing Plant Energy Efficiency Certification Program” on Thursday, November 5, 2009. On Friday, November 6, 2009, Paul Mehta, Director of the Bradley University Industrial Assessment Center, will present “Applications of Advanced Transport Membranes for Energy Efficiency.” Make sure to visit ITP in booth 215 to learn more about the resources and tools ITP offers.

IAC Directors' Meeting Welcomes Chinese Delegates, Awards Syracuse University
This year’s IAC Directors’ Meeting focused on forming partnerships with states, cities, utilities, manufacturer’s associations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the national Manufacturing Extension Program. During the July 27-28, 2009, event in Niagara Falls, New York, representatives from the 26 DOE Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC) presented partnership opportunities, energy-saving ideas for water and waste water treatment utilities, and introduced DOE initiatives on auditing standardization practices. New for this year’s event, several delegates from China participated in the meeting and discussion sessions. Additionally, ITP’s Jim Quinn awarded Syracuse University with their first IAC Center of Excellence Award. The Syracuse IAC has performed more than 190 assessments for small- and medium-sized manufacturers in New York and Pennsylvania in its 10-year history. Recommendations from each of Syracuse’s assessments average $55,000 in potential annual savings. Learn more about ITP’s other IAC locations.

Combined Heat and Power System Helps Frito-Lay Plant Get off the Grid
The Frito-Lay plant in Killingly, Connecticut, installed a combined heat and power (CHP) system in March 2009. Located in a region of the country with severe electrical transmission constraints, Frito-Lay, a business unit of PepsiCo, saw CHP as a potential opportunity for achieving near-term energy efficiency improvements, reducing the site’s carbon emissions, and supporting PepsiCo’s and Frito-Lay’s overall sustainability strategy.
Funding from the state of Connecticut helped support the installation of the CHP system. In addition, a grant from ITP to characterize the performance of the system was used to demonstrate the applicability of CHP in the food processing industry.
The Killingly plant’s combustion turbine CHP system is comprised of:
- A Solar Turbines 4.6 MW Centaur 50 natural gas combustion turbine generator, which includes combustion air inlet chilling to increase power generation during warm weather operations
- A Rentech heat recovery steam generator designed to provide steam supply
- A selective catalytic emission reduction system to help the plant meet local and state emission requirements.

Experts from the electric utility industry will address the integration of renewable energy, technology solutions, and effective forecasts for utilities at the 2nd Annual Utility Integrated Long Range Resource Planning Conference, September 15-16, 2009, in Denver, Colorado.
Attendees of the 2009 International Conference on Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Science, September 16-18, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois, will have the opportunity to visit the Gas Technology Institute’s laboratories and facilities, and learn about gasification and pyrolysis technologies through 25 scientific papers and 50 posters.
Manufacturers can attend Design & Manufacturing Midwest, September 22-24, 2009, in Rosemont, Illinois, to learn about new systems and products for manufacturing processes, design, and distribution, as well as alternative materials.
The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s 5th National Conference on Energy Efficiency as a Resource will be held September 27-29, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois. Industry leaders will discuss the latest developments in the use of energy efficiency as a key resource for meeting customer and utility system needs.
October
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Partnership will conduct its 2009 Partner’s Meeting on October 1-2, 2009, in New York, New York. Held in conjunction with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the event will feature a peer-to-peer discussion among administrators of state-run CHP grant programs.
The Gasification Technologies Conference 2009 will take place October 4-7, 2009, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and provide networking opportunities and the latest industry trends and analysis.
The 70th Conference on Glass Problems, October 13-14, 2009, in Columbus, Ohio, is the largest U.S. industrial glass meeting and features discussions on innovations and solutions for manufacturing and the future of the glass industry.
The International Food Distribution Conference & Expo, October 19-21, 2009, in Baltimore, Maryland, will showcase new products and service as well as facility tours and networking events.
November
The World Energy Engineering Congress (previously mentioned in the Headlines section of this issue) will be held November 4-6, 2009, in Washington, D.C. Attend to learn more about energy management, green energy, and other opportunities for improving industrial energy efficiency.
Attend Alternative Energy & Building Efficiency West 2009, November 19-20, 2009, in Santa Clara, California, to visit with companies that sell alternative energy or energy-efficient building products, or provide a service related to alternative energy or energy-efficient building.
January 2010
More than 4,000 food professionals from across the country will gather at the Northwest Food Manufacturing & Packaging Expo and Conference, January 17-20, 2010, in Portland, Oregon. The event will offer industry-relevant education sessions and showcase more than 450 exhibitor booths.
Cutting-edge research and product developments will be showcased at the 34th International Conference and Exposition on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, January 24-29, 2010, in Daytona Beach, Florida. The event will feature a new programming format and session topics, and a larger exposition showcasing materials, equipment, and services.

Pilot Data Center Efficiency Workshop to be Held in October
Register today to attend a Data Center Energy Efficiency Workshop developed by DOE and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This pilot workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, during the Data Center Journal Education Program in Atlanta, Georgia.
Learn how to improve the energy efficiency of data centers and other energy-intensive information and communication technology facilities and discover how to use DOE's free DC Pro Tool Suite to perform energy assessments on data center systems. ITP awards cost-shared funding for R&D and plant assessment projects through a competitive merit review process.
Applications for Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits due September 16, 2009
Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Department of Treasury is awarding $2.3 billion in tax credits for qualified investments in advanced energy projects to support new, expanded, or re-equipped domestic manufacturing facilities. DOE and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will review applications and make determinations on eligibility and merit. Preliminary applications are due to DOE and the IRS by September 16, 2009. Final applications are due October 16, 2009.
Successful applicants will receive acceptance agreements from the IRS by April 16, 2010. Projects must be completed within 4 years of acceptance. Credits will cover future expenses and will not award past investment(s).
