DOE, USGS, CoreWall Data Contributions to NGDS Data Development, Collection and Maintenance

This is a summary of a project funded on a cost-shared basis by the U.S. Department of Energy through its Geothermal Technologies Program (GTP). This work is one of several projects funded by GTP under its mission to conduct research, development, and demonstration to advance geothermal energy technologies. This summary was prepared as part of the application process by the subsequent recipient of a funding opportunity grant and is offered only as a general overview of the project's scope and direction at the time of the award.

Objectives

Description

Significant growth in the geothermal industry contribution to the national energy portfolio requires reducing the risks and cost of defining resources, characterizing new classes of larger energy resources, optimizing management and expansion of exploited geothermal fields, and ensuring a path for technology growth into the future, in particular providing the science and engineering basis for conventional and enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). But all of this is predicated on an enhanced knowledge, and knowledge requires accessible data. Data are the underpinnings of science and engineering, the basis for investment decisions, and they are crucial for land and natural resource management. However, industry, science, and nation have not done an adequate job of capturing and providing these scientific data to users (researchers, industry, state and federal agencies, and the public). "National Geothermal Data System" (NGDS) is designed as a system for data acquisition, management and maintenance and provides for access to distributed data by a wide variety of users, including federal and state agencies, other databases, researchers, decision makers, the public, educational institutions, and the geothermal industry and financial institutions.

In order to develop a comprehensive data system, the NGDS must be able to manage, and provide access to various data types, and data from multiple sources. Boise State University is responsible for NGDS design, testing and management. This additional award to BSU will facilitate the preservation of DOE, USGS and CoreWall new project and legacy data.

Targets/Milestones

  • Digitize, organize and upload data from DOE-funded geothermal demonstration projects
  • Digitize, organize and upload US Geological Survey legacy data and data associated with the DOE funded Geothermal Resource Assessment and Classification
  • Integrate CoreWall Data into the NGDS

Impacts Benefits: Facilitate geothermal resource characterization and development efforts; integrate USGS geothermal classification scale and resource characterization into the NGDS allowing greater data sharing with the public and industry.
