WATERGY

A simple spreadsheet model that screens sites for potential water conservation opportunities and illustrates the energy savings that result from water conservation activities. The user inputs site-specific data including utility bill information, water usage, water, sewer, treatment, and energy costs, and numbers and kinds of water-using fixtures. The program then gives the user various conservation opportunities, the direct and indirect water and energy savings from these options, costs, and the payback period.

Keywords

water conservation opportunities, energy savings

Validation/Testing

N/A

Expertise Required

Basic knowledge of Excel or Lotus required.

Users

50 contractors under the SAVEnergy Audit Program administered by the Federal Energy Management Program.

Audience

Building energy and water auditors; facility managers.

Input

Energy, water use, associated cost data, and fixture data are entered as specified.

Output

Water conservation opportunities, costs, and direct and indirect savings are output in pre-formatted reports.

Computer Platform

Runs on Excel or Lotus spreadsheet, Mac or PC.

Programming Language

NA

Strengths

Very effective in screening for water conservation opportunities and showing the relationship between water and energy savings resulting from water conservation projects.

Weaknesses

Conservation from once-through cooling, cooling towers, and leak detection are not quantified in this model because of the wide variation in cost, effectiveness, and site specific information needed to estimate conservation opportunities.
