The BEopt™ (Building Energy Optimization) software provides capabilities to analyze residential building designs and identify cost-optimal efficiency and renewable energy packages at various levels of whole-house energy savings along the path to zero net energy. BEopt can be used to analyze both new construction and existing home retrofits, through evaluation of single building designs, parametric sweeps, and cost-based optimizations.

BEopt provides detailed simulation-based analysis based on specific house characteristics, such as size, architecture, occupancy, vintage, location, and utility rates. Discrete envelope and equipment options, reflecting realistic construction materials and practices, are evaluated. Screen Shots

Validation/Testing

BEopt uses existing, established simulation engines (currently DOE2.2 or EnergyPlus) verified against IEA BESTest comparative test procedures.

Expertise Required

The user interface combines quick inputs with detailed outputs, and allows different use levels. Building science and engineering background is helpful for analysis of detailed results.

Input

The BEopt user interface has three input screens: 1) a drawing tool to input and visualize 3D building geometry, 2) an option selection screen to specify measures for envelope components, equipment, appliances, occupancy, etc., and (3) a site data screen to specify location, utility rates, and economic inputs. The interface can be tailored for either new construction or retrofit analysis.

Output

Detailed energy/cost results and comparison for user-selectable multiple building designs (several thousand in optimization mode), financial calculations, energy end-use charts, efficiency measure descriptions, and costs. Visualization of detailed hourly output.

Strengths

Provides a user-friendly interface for detailed simulation engines. Whole building energy analysis includes: heating, cooling, ventilation, water heating, lighting, appliances, misc. loads, solar water heating and PV. Select from a large library of standard energy efficiency options or add your own options. Evaluate/compare individual building designs or optimize across thousands of combinations of efficiency options and PV. Automatically generates reference cases consistent with current energy codes.

Weaknesses

Limited to simulation of residential buildings.
