WegoWise provides an industry-leading web-based utility analytics platform for the building-performance industry. Bridging big data and energy efficiency, WegoWise distills large aggregations of energy and water data into useful, actionable information for building owners, managers, energy auditors and building efficiency programs, enabling them to automatically track, understand and benchmark building performance, and make better efficiency investment decisions. WegoWise’s platform regularly identifies impressive opportunities for cost savings, as inefficient buildings typically pay four times the utility costs of efficient buildings. Screen Shots

Validation/Testing

WegoWise maintains the world’s largest database for multifamily building utility data—currently, more than 16,000 buildings—which it uses to create a proprietary benchmark for multifamily buildings. The quality and breadth of this database enables better building comparisons and more statistically significant insights. For all other building types, WegoWise utilizes EPA's Portfolio Manager benchmarks.

Expertise Required

WegoWise’s platform presents information in clear, actionable charts and graphs. Due to the simple set-up, no special expertise or training is required, and the charts and graphs are easy to understand for nontechnical and managerial audiences.

Users

WegoWise currently has more than 1,000 users across the United States and Canada.

Audience

WegoWise provides a scalable energy efficiency platform for residential and commercial building owners and managers, energy service providers and auditors, engineering firms, energy consultants and utility efficiency programs. Additionally, WegoWise seamlessly integrates into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Portfolio Manager program, eliminating time that users affected by new building energy disclosure ordinances spend uploading utility bills for compliance.

Input

Users simply answer a few basic questions about their buildings, like age and construction type and then WegoWise’s platform then automatically collects utility data, normalizes and compares buildings by energy intensity (e.g., btu per square foot), building characteristics and weather, and presents the information in clear, actionable charts and graphs—no data entry required.

Output

These reports are designed to be clear and easy-to-understand, and includeReports include information on building energy benchmarks, measurement and verification of building upgrades, and comparative statistics and charts to prioritize poorly performing buildings across a portfolio. These reports also include performance compared to WegoWise’s proprietary multi-family energy benchmarks, as well as the EPA’s Energy Star scores. Additionally, WegoWise’s output seamlessly integrates with EPA Portfolio Manager to comply with utility data disclosure regulations and other uses.

Strengths

WegoWise uses the abundance of data points that utilities and bill payers already have, with an affordable, easy-to-implement platform that can scale across entire real estate portfolios. The platform’s easy to digest charts and graphs clearly present portfolio-level insight, allowing managers to quickly benchmark their buildings against other buildings in the WegoWise platform. Using this information, owners and managers can quickly identify their least efficient buildings—which could benefit the most from audits and targeted upgrades—and prioritize retrofits. Rather than costly smart grid deployments, elaborate building management systems or complicated sensor networks, the WegoWise platform provides universal building intelligence without additional equipment, democratizing energy efficiency for buildings of all types and resources. Additionally, WegoWise automatically integrates into Portfolio Manager and eliminates the time staff have to spend uploading utility bills—making complying with energy data disclosure regulations quick and painless. WegoWise’s benefits extend post-retrofit as well. Traditional measurement and verification requires meter installation and on-site engineers and consultants—which can add up to 10 percent to project costs and overhead. WegoWise enables whole-building remote measurement and verification by regressing utility data against historic weather data to develop models of buildings’ baseline energy consumption. Comparing utility data post-upgrade illuminates whole-building savings at a fraction of the cost of traditional techniques.

Weaknesses

WegoWise does not connect directly to BAS/EMS systems—the platform’s core model relies on utility bill data. With most utilities providing data online, it’s easier than ever before to access years of historic usage and billing history, powering WegoWise’s low-touch universal platform. Instead of granular single-building information, WegoWise powers broad, sweeping and actionable insights at the scale real estate professionals need.
