scSTREAM
scSTREAM, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program developed in 1984, has been used in a wide variety of commercial applications. scSTREAM can calculate the phenomena related to HVAC (airflow, heat transfer--including radiation and solar radiation, humidity, condensation, contamination distribution, and air quality indexes--for all sizes of buildings. Keywords
Computational fluid dynamics, CFD, ventilation, airflow, temperature distribution, humidity distribution, contaminant distribution, thermal comfort, air quality
Validation/Testing
Some validation cases compared to publicly available experimental data are included in the manual.
Expertise Required
3-day training course for new users recommended.
Users
3,000-3,500 (90% in Japan)
Audience
Any engineers engaged in the design of ventilation systems.
Input
Geometry, initial temperature, flow rate for air supplies, and heat transfer condition.
Material property library is provided.
Solar radiation requires geographical, time and date, and weather information.
Output
Air velocity, temperature, pressure, streamlines, contaminant concentrations, humidity, condensation rate, accumulated condensed water, and various air quality indexes. Includes animation.
Computer Platform
Windows:
XP, Vista, 7, server OS
Linux:
RedHat Enterprise Linux 4, 5
SuSE Linux Enterprise server 9, 10
Programming Language
Fortran
Strengths
Very fast and stable simulation
Powerful visualization
Many advanced functions; can be used for many other simulations such as wind simulation, electronics cooling, and free surface problems.
Weaknesses
It is not suitable for accurate prediction, within 5% accuracy or better compared with experimental data, of the behavior very near to a curved surface because Cartesian grids are used. One such example is the wind load prediction of a round building.
