UrbaWind is an automatic CFD software solution for wind modeling in the built environment. This tool is dedicated to work-oriented applications: natural ventilation, wind energy, and pedestrian wind comfort. The results have been validated against wind tunnel testing, on-site measurements and standard CFD packages used for wind modeling by wind energy experts (The Bolund experiment, Risoe 2009). Validations have been presented at various international conferences such as International Small Wind Conference (Watford, UK – April 2009), New Zealand Wind Energy Conference (Palmerston North, NZ – March 2010) and AWEA Wind Power Conference (Dallas, TX – May 2010).

Expertise Required

No previous experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is required. Meteodyn offers one-day training courses for new users. The training includes a theoretical part and a hands-on part with case studies. The training can be done at the user’s office location or in one of the Meteodyn offices in the United States, France, or China. The software license includes technical support by e-mail and phone.


The users of UrbaWind include engineering consultants, research centers, and universities from the United States, Spain, France, England, Portugal, and China.


UrbaWind is targeted toward building engineers, architects, urban planners, and wind turbine installers.


The user needs to define the buildings and vegetation with computer assisted documents (STL format). The topography can be input as STL format if the terrain is not flat. The ground roughness can be designed in a grid point format (xyz) to define the ground type (water, asphalt, or grass). The computation mesh and the boundary conditions are automatically generated.

A wind database is already integrated in the software for the whole world. The user can also use its own on-site measurements (as a text file with statistics of speeds and directions).


Outputs formats are Excel files, text , and 3D visualizations. Results can be on solid contours or as vectors on horizontal and vertical planes. Outputs include wind characteristics by direction (wind speeds, turbulence, pressure, and wind gust) and work-oriented results for wind energy (mean wind speeds, annual wind energy production, Weibull coefficients), natural ventilation (air debits and renewal rate in buildings by season), and pedestrian comfort (comfort maps).

Computer Platform

Windows 7, XP, Vista. Parallel computations can be done on a multicore computer. The minimum configuration is 2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM and a graphical card of 256 Mo.

UrbaWind is the only automatic CFD software for wind modeling in the built environment. The solver is robust. Calculations are fast and results are work-oriented.

For natural ventilation in tropical humid regions, UrbaWind can be used as a stand-alone program for the thermal studies in the buildings.


UrbaWind cannot be used for calculating wind extreme pressure on buildings for building construction. The software does not include thermal calculations. For natural ventilation in a temperate climate, the software has to be coupled with a thermal software solution.
