Building Energy Analyzer
Provides quick economic analysis for commercial and industrial buildings. Building Energy Analyzer (BEA) estimates annual and monthly loads and costs associated with air-conditioning, heating, on-site power generation, thermal storage, and heat recovery systems for a given building and location. The user can compare the performance of standard and high efficiency electric chillers, variable speed electric chillers, absorption chillers, engine chillers, thermal storage, on-site generators, heat recovery, or desiccant systems. The user can also prepare side-by-side economic comparisons of different energy options and equipment life cycle cost analysis. The BEA is a system screening tool. It is a tool that is flexible enough to evaluate a variety of commercially available HVAC and power generation options. The BEA includes representative models of 15 different applications including a typical building envelope and typical HVAC, lighting, and power systems, weather files for 233 locations, sophisticated DOE-2.1E computational engine (transparent to the user), life cycle cost analysis module, and it handles complex utility rates structures. The BEA provides economic analysis for cooling (electric, gas, hybrid - 16 different technologies); desiccant dehumidification (gas, electric - 6 system configurations); humidification (gas, electric); heating (gas, electric); thermal storage (5 different technologies); on-site power generation (8 different technologies); waste heat recovery (to heating, DHW, absorption, dehumidifier); and OA economizer and sensible/enthalpy heat recovery. Keywords
air-conditioning, heating, on-site power generation, heat recovery, CHP, BCHP.
Validation/Testing
N/A
Expertise Required
General knowledge of commercial building HVAC systems, and on-site power generation technology. Knowledge of buildings energy analysis is helpful. No computer programming experience is required.
Users
Over 60 users in US
Audience
HVAC and power generation consultants, system designers and operators. Facility managers, gas and electric utility marketers, ESCO engineers and marketers, and HVAC/power generation equipment marketers.
Input
All inputs are by choosing options in the Windows-based program such as location, type or binning operation, schedule of data to include and selection of binning and mean coincident variables.
Output
: Calculated results can be generated in summary reports: Short Report, Rate Report, Detailed Report, and Life Cycle Cost Economics Report. Short Report includes Input/Output Data Summary Report; Rate Report includes Electric and Gas Rate Information; Detailed Report includes Monthly Loads, Energy Consumption, and Costs data; and LCC Economics Report includes cash flow and simple and life cycle payback information. The user can also view and print a number of descriptive graphs that summarize the results of the analysis.
Computer Platform
PC with CD-ROM drive operating in 32-bit Windows environment (95, 98, NT, XP and 2000).
Programming Language
Visual Basic with DOE-2.1E macros and templates.
Strengths
During its development, an effort was made to eliminate complex design parameters from the programs user input. Default values are provided for all user modifiable inputs. Sophisticated DOE-2.1E computational engine runs in the background transparent to the user.
Weaknesses
General knowledge of commercial building HVAC systems, and on-site power generation technology is needed to fully utilize Building Energy Analyzer potential.
