Provides a user-friendly interface for calculating thermal comfort parameters and making thermal comfort predictions using several thermal comfort models. The calculations made by the Thermal Comfort software are based on equations, algorithms and models extracted from the literature (Fanger 1967, Gagge Fobelets Berglund 1986, Doherty Arens 1988, and Int-Hout 1990). The Thermal Comfort software is specifically intended as a tool to simplify the use of these equations, algorithms and models. The CD-ROM comes complete with an online user's manual.

The Thermal Comfort program predicts human thermal response to a selected environment using several thermal comfort models, including PMV-PPD, ET*-DISC. This software allows you to calculate the predicted thermal comfort for the average hypothetical human at a point in space. All you need to know to run the program is a few things about the thermal environment you want to model and a few things about the person you want to put in that environment. This program is not a "design tool" for determining thermal sensation in any specific building. No effort has been made to prescribe measurement methods, measurement accuracy, HVAC system type, internal and external heat loads etc., that such a "design-tool" would require. Screen Shots

Input

An input window on the left side of a dialog box is provided for inputting environmental conditions and personal conditions (Room Temperature, Mean radiant temperature (MRT), Air Velocity, Relative Humidity, Activity-Mets, Clothing-clos). Detailed model input allows the adjustment of several variables that will not be adjusted for most analyses. These are barometric pressure, turbulence intensity, and mean monthly outdoor temperature. The unit system can be set for either SI or IP units.

Output

Output is displayed in a window on the right side of the dialog box. The output represents the predicted human thermal response to the environment inputted. Output file formatting allows changes to the output file. Just pick the variables you would like to have and the output file will be written in comma-delimited ASCII (CSV) format that can be easily imported to Excel or other spreadsheet program. A check-box is provided for writing a header containing the names of the variables to the file.

Computer Platform

Requires Windows-based 486 or Pentium computer with CD drive, and Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.5 or later. For Windows 95 and NT, 8MB of RAM (16MB recommended) and 10MB of free hard-disk space is required. The CD-ROM will not run on a Mac-based or Unix-based system.

Strengths

References thermal comfort standards ASHRAE Standard 55 and ISO 7730. This software calculates PMV and thereby determines compliance with the ISO standard comfort recommendation.

The clo calculator is a tool you can use to generate and store your own clothing ensembles. Just click on the items you would like to include in the clothing ensemble and the clo value is automatically calculated for you. You can also store the clothing ensemble you created in the library. It will then appear in the pull down list on the main screen.

Physiological data input control is also provided with the CD-ROM. For most types of analyses, inputs at this level won't need to be changed. But we've given you access just in case you want to experiment. These inputs and outputs are only relevant to the ET* model.

Thermal comfort terms and definitions used in thermal comfort research, literature, standards, etc. are included in the CD-ROMS User's Manual for completeness.

Weaknesses

The ASHRAE Thermal Comfort Tool is not a design tool for determining thermal sensation in any specific building. There are also aspects of ASHRAE Standard 55 compliance that are not addressed in this program. Please consult the standard directly for compliance requirements and verification.

Remember that these predictions are for large populations. Individual differences in thermal preference vary widely so these models cannot be used to reliably predict the response of an individual.
