Pisces

Sizes hot or chilled-water circuits. PISCES accounts for single or two-pipe systems, reverse-return systems or any mixture of these circuit types. When sizing single-pipe systems, a local allowance is made for gravity effects for the flow through the radiator section. PISCES can be used for sizing systems from scratch, or as a check on an existing system, when pipe sizes and flow rates are specified. Different pipe materials, lagging properties and surface emissivities can also be specified. The circuit can be balanced using valves only, or by resizing non-index paths in the network. Velocity limits can be defined for the system, and if required, certain pipes in the system can be fixed in size.

Users

Many in UK and Europe.

Audience

Mechanical building services engineers.

Input

General design data such as design method, and maximum velocities; predefined common pipe parameters; information about each pipe, including connections, lengths, and codes indicating the types of connected fittings, and design limits.

Output

Single-page printouts of input data or results. Output file with selected input data and results. Results for each section of pipe work: mass flow rate, pipe size, pipe and valve pressure drops, velocity, temperatures, heat emissions, and pipe pressure-loss gradient. Results for the complete system: the required boiler/chiller output, circuit resistance, pump power of circuit, water content of pipe work, identification of the index path, length of each pipe size required, length of lagging required for each pipe size, and an optional list of parts.

Computer Platform

PC running Windows 95, 98 or NT (3.51 or higher). 100 MB RAM. 100 MB disk space. CD-ROM drive.

Programming Language

Visual Basic, Fortran 77

Strengths

Detailed control over sizing of pipes. Can be used for checking existing pipe networks, even when the sizes are non-standard.

Weaknesses

Radiator details are not entered separately from the pipes but as a special kind of pipe. Fitting details are not entered separately from the pipes but are entered with the pipe data as special codes.
